AGATE SNUFF BOTTLE
QING DYNASTY, CIRCA 1750-1830
6.1 cm high (without stopper)
The snuff bottle is of oval form, supported on a footrim, the cylindrical neck with a slightly concave lip. The main side is carved in relief with a saddled horse strapped to a post, skillfully articulated from the dark brown inclusion in the stone, the details finely incised. The interior is well hollowed, the translucent agate of a light, warm tone. The carved coral stopper is mounted with a gilt-metal collar.
For three agate snuff bottles of the same subject, see Hugh M. Moss, Snuff Bottles of China, 1971, cat. no. 61, 65 and 66, p.76-79.
