BRONZE TRIPOD INCENSE BURNER
17TH CENTURY
8.9 cm high, 13.5 cm wide
The incense burner stands on three cabriole legs, the sides spreading to a flaring mouth. The body is set with a pair of angular bamboo-shaped handles. The base bears an apocryphal six-character mark of Xuande. The surface is patinated to a rich, caramel brown colour.
Among the many bronze incense burners of the Ming and early Qing dynasty, the shape of the present incense burner is relatively rare. Compare an example with elephant head shaped feet and ruyi motifs on the handles, illustrated in Sotheby's Hong Kong, Later Bronzes: From the Collection of Mr and Mrs Gerard Hawthorn, 3 December 2015, lot. 38.
