YAOZHOU WARE BOWL

NORTHERN SONG DYNASTY (960-1127)

6.2 cm high, 11.7 cm diameter

The small bowl stands on a straight foot, the rounded sides rising to a flaring mouth rim. The exterior is carved with a floral pattern, the glaze pooling in the recesses. The interior is moulded with six lines radiating from the recessed center to the mouth rim. The bowl is covered inside and out with an olive-green glaze.

Since floral designs among Yaozhou ware dishes and bowls are commonly carved or moulded on the interior surface, the present bowl is unusual for its carved design on the outside. A similar bowl is published by the Shaanxi Province and Yaozhou Kilns Museum in The Yaozhou Kiln Site of the Song Period, The Institute of Archaeology, 1998, pl. XVIII, fig. 6. Bb.
