CIZHOU-TYPE PAINTED JAR
NORTHERN SONG-JIN DYNASTY (960-1234)
11.4 cm high
The jar rises from a straight foot to a globular body and a straight neck with a lipped rim. The shoulders and neck are applied with two small strap handles. The exterior is freely painted in dark brown slip onto a layer of white slip with a floral scroll in between two triple-line borders, all underneath a transparent glaze. The interior is covered with a dark brown glaze. The recessed base is partly left unglazed showing the greyish buff material.
