JADE GOURD GROUP

18TH CENTURY

6.5 cm wide

The stone is naturalistically rendered in the form of three gourds growing from a gnarled branch with curling leaves and tendrils. The material is undercut and carved in openwork, resulting in a very realistic and vivid depiction of the subject. The finely polished stone is of pale celadon colour with some areas of mottling.

The double gourd represents good fortune, happiness and wealth. In Daoist teachings, it is regarded as a symbol of the universe uniting heaven and earth, and represents longevity.

Formerly in a Dutch private collection
