LACQUER AND STONE-INLAID DISH
QING DYNASTY, 18TH CENTURY
10.6 cm wide
The small square dish with indented corners is delicately inlaid in the interior with various colourful stones, amber and mother-of-pearl to depict a spray of blooming peonies growing from rocks. A purple beetle sits on top of one of the flowers. The grass and flower stems are painted in green and brown. The dish is lacquered black and supported on four shallow feet.
A dish of similar shape and size, decorated in the same technique with a landscape, is in the collection of The British Museum and illustrated in Chinese and Associated Lacquer from the Garner Collection, 1973, pl. 56, no. 143a.
