LACQUER STEMBOWL

16TH CENTURY

9.4 cm high

The cinnabar-red lacquer bowl has rounded sides with a flaring rim and is supported on a stem with a splayed foot. The exterior of the bowl is carved in relief with four birds amidst flowers all against a diaper ground. Two birds are depicted in flight, the other two perched, one picking the seeds from a pomegranate. The scene is framed between a key fret and petal border. The stem is carved with repeated flowers and decorative borders. A metal liner covers the interior of the bowl.
