BAMBOO BRUSH POT
18TH - EARLY 19TH CENTURY
12.2 cm high, 5.5 cm diameter
The small brush pot is of cylindrical form supported on three short feet. The exterior is carved with a branch of plum tree with buds and blossoms growing from the gnarled branches. The natural base is concave and the interior shows traces of use. The surface has patinated to a warm tone and is smooth to the touch.
The simplicity of the material and form of the present brush pot was highly favoured among the scholarly elite of the period. The graceful design of carved blossoming plum tree represents endurance, perseverance and longevity. Brush pots of this small size were made for the scholar's desk to hold small brushes.
