GLAZED MINIATURE VESSEL

SOUTHERN DYNASTIES (420-589)

OR SUI DYNASTY (581-618)

7.2 cm high

The waisted sides of the vessel are adorned with finely incised lines, accentuating the shape. The slightly domed top of the simulated cover rises to a stepped pedestal set with a drop-shaped finial. The surface is covered with a thin crackled green glaze pooling at the flaring base. The unglazed underside has a small aperture in the centre.

This unusual miniature model of a covered vessel was probably a burial gift. The shape is made after metal containers of larger size. A Chinese bronze covered vessel, dating from the same period and of closely related shape, is in the Asian Art Museum, San Francisco, museum number B64B2.
