WUCAI PORCELAIN CENSER

CHONGZHEN PERIOD (1628-1644)

8.2 cm high, 10.9 cm diameter

The censer is of cylindrical form, slightly tapering towards the foot, and supported on a foot rim. The exterior is painted in underglaze blue and overglaze enamels with a continuous scene of a central figure approached by a second figure carrying a basket, and a third figure carrying luggage. A horse shows its head from behind a slope below a tree. Rocks and misty clouds connect the beginning and end of the scene. A border of detached ornaments adorns the brown-glazed rim. The glazed base is inscribed with a four-character seal mark in underglaze blue. The interior is left unglazed.
