BLACK POTTERY CUP
YUAN DYNASTY (1279-1368)
10.8 cm wide
The shallow cup is supported on a slightly flaring foot ring, the rounded sides terminating in a lipped rim surmounted with a handle in the form of a dragon head. The blackish material smoothened to a gentle sheen.
Yuan-dynasty cups of this type were also made from gold and jade. A very similar cup was sold at Sotheby's New York, 17 September 2013, lot 77. A gold example is illustrated in Bo Gyllensvärd, Chinese Gold and Silver in the Carl Kempe Collection, Stockholm, 1953, cat. no. 53A.
