ZITAN BOWL
QING DYNASTY, 18TH CENTURY
7.4 cm diameter, 4.8 cm high
The heavily turned small bowl stands on a straight foot rising to a U-shape. The hollowed interior is neatly finished, the inside rim gently rounded. The flat base is slightly recessed to create a shallow foot ring. The surface bears a dark, rich patina that enhances the dense grain of the wood.
A comparable, but possibly slightly earlier, bowl is illustrated in Marcus Flacks, Custodians of the Scholar’s Way: Chinese Scholar’s Objects in Precious Woods, 2014, pp. 185–86.

Formerly in The Peony Collection, Hong Kong
